The challenge

A manufacturer of PUR foam and other sealing materials for the construction industry commissioned Attema Kunststof & Techniek to develop and produce a user- friendly PUR pistol for semi-professional use. The commissioned pistol was required to meet the following specifications:
 - in terms of design and colour, the pistol
   should be professional in appearance (showing an
   obvious association with professional equipment)
 - fitting with an ergonomic grip and lie well in the hand
 - lightweight so that users can use it in one
   go for longer periods of time
 - made of material with high chemical stability
   and high compressive strength geared to the
   processing properties of PUR foam can
 - have a locking position for when the pistol
    is not in use
 - allow accurate foam dosing
 - easy to clean

The approach

The most difficult task was to develop a dosage system that ensures dispensing of a correct quantity of uniform-quality foam. To achieve this, the pistol was fitted with a non-return valve and a tightly-fitting seal. Such seals are necessary because moisture in the air causes PUR to harden. The ergonomic requirement was easy to meet, as the design properties plastic has are, in that respect, better than those of metal, which is heavier as well. Attema Kunststof & Techniek launched a new operational requirement programme, making models that were tested in the field and modified where necessary. Attema manufactures the various plastic components.

The solution

A high-grade PUR pistol for quick and effective sealing of holes and cracks. A product that clearly sets the client apart from the rest of the market. For the user, an auxiliary tool that is durable, pleasing to look at, and easy to clean.
